CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVISTS

Read the handout, "Freedom Now: The Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi." The purpose of the reading is to describe and explain the importance of activists and their organizations in achieving equal rights. Please highlight and annotate the following:
* Key organizations and groups(include purpose, successes)
* Key leaders and participants and their contributions
* Key tactics or actions used to achieve change
* Reaction of local whites to the movement in Mississippi.
* Reaction of the the federal government to the Civil Rights Movement

Read "July 1945: The Moment of Decision" and highlight and annotate the following:
1. The initial US strategy for ending the war in the Pacific.
2. The members of the advisory panel.
3. Key aspects of each of the 6 "critical" factors the panel was using to decide whether or to use the atomic bomb.
4. Important sentences in the Potsdam Declaration that help you understand other possible reasons to use the atomic bomb.
